It’s so easy to get caught up in what is “supposed to be done” that we lose sight of what is truly important to us. This could be applied to many areas of life, but one big one is within our own home. Create a Home Mission Statement to determine what matters most and keep that focus. Knowing your priorities when it comes to homemaking will help you put your efforts where they really count.
Make Your Efforts Matter
It’s time to stop wasting valuable resources (time, energy, money) on efforts that matter little to you or your husband. Take some time to consider what you both care about and make this a priority in your home.
The best way to do this is to create a Home Mission Statement – something that reflects the purpose of your home, your values relating to the space you occupy, and your reason behind it.
A Home Mission Statement is something that you can put some thought into up front, and it will then give you the freedom to prioritize what is important in the future. You may be amazed at how many different decisions it will impact.
How to Write a Mission Statement For Your Home
The first thing you will want to do is take some time to talk with your hubby about what is important to both of you. (Consider doing this during your next Weekly Huddle.) You may want to sit down with the worksheet provided and go through that together, but I do suggest having an open conversation first to see what comes to light off the top of your minds.
From there, look at your what, your how, and your why…
- What do you want to accomplish within your home?
Consider what the purpose of your home is, what role does it play in your lives?
- How will you accomplish this?
For this question, you need to take into consideration your values, style, attitude, the feel you are going for, and the overall environment you want to create. Be sure to consider more than just the physical appearance and look at the entire atmosphere.
- Lastly, why is this important?
Why does this matter to you? Dig deep here. This question will help ensure that you are prioritizing what matters to your family rather than just trying to please others.
- Now, pull this all together into your Home Mission Statement. You can follow a formula that looks something like:
The mission of our home is to:
For the purpose of / So that:
Make it Happen
Just writing something down on paper does not change much. If you want to truly implement this Home Mission Statement into your lives, you need a plan to take action.
For starters, determine where you are at now – does your home closely resemble the home that is described in your Home Mission Statement?
Next, come up with some ideas on what changes need to happen to bring the reality of your home closer to what you envisioned in your Home Mission Statement. Choose one or two steps that you believe would be the most effective (yet doable) and commit to working on those first. Continue to add in additional steps as others have been accomplished and soon enough, you’ll be living inside of your mission.
